Social media is fun for me and I love learning about new social media platforms. I kept hearing about Snapchat and how different influencers were using it to grow their community.  So, obviously I wanted to try it and see why people loved it.

I signed up for my account, and… I didn’t get it. I had no idea what to do. It seemed confusing and complicated (ok, maybe I’m a little impatient). But I thought, other people are loving this platform, it can’t be that hard. And, it really isn’t. Once I started using it more I realized why people found it so interesting. This is what I learned from Snapchat.

Snapchat allows you to show your personality

With other social media networks, you do want to show your personality and what makes your brand unique, however, you still want to remain professional. You wouldn’t want to be sharing pics of your dog on LinkedIn (unless you’re a pet shop owner or veterinarian) but you absolutely can on Snapchat. It is a place where you can show your community the behind-the-scenes of your life, in a more casual way.

Practice being on video

I don’t know about you, but I am not a huge fan of being in front of the camera. I finally got over this and did a few Periscope videos, but even when I make my YouTube videos, I show my screen and teach social media tutorials and how-to’s. Snapchat is short 10 second videos and are only available for 24 hours, so unless someone takes a screenshot, it doesn’t seem as scary doing videos. I use this is an opportunity to practice and feel more comfortable in front of the camera.

Connect with your community on another level

what i learned using snapchatI follow certain people on social media, so I added them on Snapchat and I can interact with them on another level. That sounds silly, but it’s true. I feel comfortable sending them feedback and interacting with them, whereas on Facebook, I might only ‘Like’ a post of their vs. sending them a quick question or comment. You can your community questions and get their input on things related to you or your brand.

Snapchat for business might not be for everyone, but in general, it is a fun and relaxed way of sharing on social media, and for some people, the fact it’s only available for 24 hours might be a huge bonus.
